Mit Hasil Adkins verließ vor kurzem einer der Urväter der Kaputt-Rock'n'Roll-Alleinunterhalter die Bühne, aber die Enkelgeneration der One Man-Bands gibt Anlass zur Hoffnung. Neben Bob Logg III., BBQ, Fredovitch, Elvis Pummel oder dem Beatman himself mischt sich nun auch ein verrückter junger Franzose dazu. Dabei handelt es sich um Jay, den Drummer von THUNDERCRACK und der fantastischen SQUARES. Auf seinem Voodo Rhythm-Debüt bringt uns der automatische König 14 ziemlich kaputte Nummern, darunter zwei Cover ("The model" von KRAFTWERK und DEVOs "Mongoloid"). Alles im Trash Rock'n'Roll-Gewand, nahe bei Billy Childishs Bluesgebolze, den REATARDS oder meinetwegen auch den Vertretern der alten Garde wie Slim Harpo. Und das Interessante bei KING AUTOMATIC ist, dass er ALLE Instrumente selber spielt. Und zwar gleichzeitig. Das ist vor allem live eine wilde Schau, ist für die Platte allerdings nicht von so erheblicher Bedeutung. Was dabei zählt, ist, dass der King ein ziemlich guter Songwriter ist, und dass er seine Songs auch adäquat produzieren kann. Alles ist da stimmig, Killer-Songs und die debil kaputte Grundhaltung dazu, das ist schon sehr klasse. (07/10) (Gereon Helmer)

It sounds like it was recorded in a dumpster, parked in the red, and if you're still wondering how they built the pyramids, this distort-o-rama/burn your pyjama will surely take your mind off the equatation and have you asking how one man can make a racket like this? The king plays kick and snare drum, guitar and organ + sings - all at the same time, and leaves a smoking tambourine and the smell of melted rockyfour in his tracks. The reverb on this baby will have our interplanetary neighbors filing complaints over off-key organ chords and high frequenzy menagerie for the next two millenniums, but this is worth it. Five out of five for the impressive performance and appropriately deep and focused recording, and - this really opens up in multi-channel!

SLEAZEGRINDER (USA)  

I can’t say for certain, but I think King Automatic might call himself that because he writes his ‘songs’ on the spot. He’s a one-man noisebomb from France who cranks out headache making blasts of spastic trash rock, inspired, I think, by 50’s goonabilly and the sound of refrigerators falling off the backs of trucks on the highway and smashing into oncoming traffic. The songs on Automatic Ray are voodoo-fuzz freakouts, some of ‘em completely un-synched, resulting in weirdo mish-mashes like “Waitress Problem” and “Welcome to Disneyworld” that feature instrumentation so fractured that the barking drums sound like they’re 5 steps ahead of the over-driven guitars, while some nut with a bullhorn howls from the alley out back. The schizophrenic racket rarely congeals, but when it does, as on King’s dead-on static-punk cover of Kraftwerk’s “The Model”, the searing, primal rock n’ roll hedonism rattling deep in KA’s bones shine through. Mostly, though, he prefers screaming, out-of-control drum machines, and a stuttering, blown-out guitar. It’s just easier that way, I guess. Anyway, if the Cramps are too fuckin’ complicated for you, then get this. And then get some help.

Linkshalf of linksback stond ik in mijn team. Dit had soms fatale gevolgen, want ik kon er niets van. Ik heb het over 

voetballen. Toch was ik er wel bezeten van, maar door de steeds grimmigere sfeer verdween de lol. Het laatste seizoen was dramatisch. Standen als 0-8, 0-9 en 0-12 werden er genoteerd. En niet ten voordele van mijn team. De genadeslag was een 2-25. Het was een Godswonder dat wij er nog twee ingekregen hebben. Met de teamsport had ik het hierna snel gezien. Ik ontdekte de individuele sport. Hierbij ben ik zelf verantwoordelijk voor mijn daden. In de muziek gaat het net zo. De meeste muzikanten zoeken een eigen team, maar een enkeling probeert het zelf. King Automatic - zijn echte naam is Jay - (Frankrijk) heeft een team in de garagerockband Thundercrack, maar hier doet hij het voor het eerst solo op een album waarbij hij zijn zang begeleidt met gitaar, drums en orgel. En dat alles in een opgefokte vorm van rauwe blues en rock 'n' roll, zoals we in Nederland kennen van Belch en Ottoboy. De opnames zijn thuis of live opgenomen en vallen vooral op door de grote hoeveelheid energie die vrijkomt. Nu nog een tour door Nederland waarbij ik hem kan bewonderen en toejuichen. En dat graag met flink wat publiek waarbij wij samen een hecht team vormen dat alles uit King Automatic perst.

King Automatic – Automatic Ray (Voodoo Rhythm) This is the second Voodoo Rhythm release I’ve listened to, the first being John Schooley and I’m well impressed in the direction this label is going – The One Man Band World Domination has just begun so look out all you duo wannabe guitar / drumming freaks. King Automatic mixes trashed up blues punk with electronic noise and on occasions the distortion is turned way up it just becomes a wall of noise. The only reference I can point to is Bob Log III though King Automatic has a little more to offer and even plays the organ at the same time as guitar and drums (that alone is a must see). Thank god that Horst is in another state as we get a cover of Kraftwork’s “the Model” as well as Devo’s “Mongoloid”.

Da betritt ein Franzose die Bühne und bedient gleichzeitig Gitarre, Orgel, Schlagzeug, Mundharmonika und was weiss ich, habe ja nicht mitgeschrieben sondern meine Kiefer vorsichtig wieder nach oben gezogen damit die Füsse Platz hatten zum tanzen. Und nun schiebt der Kerli noch eine Platte nach bei der es mir wieder gleich geht. Und dies von einem Schlagzeuger! Dem von THUNDERCRACK. Deren Garage-Punk dient als Ausgangslage, angerührt mit übertop eigenem Songmaterial, einem Cover von KRAFTWERK und DEVO und ergänzt durch eine gewisse Hypnotik welche die Arbeit mit live sampeln und sogleich loopen mit sich bringt. Verdammt, als wäre QUESTION MARK an der Orgel und würde zuammen mit den OBLIVIANS Songs von ALAIN VEGA hindreschen. Kein Moment kommt hier Langeweile auf oder hat man das Gefühl einer allein sei eben zwei zu wenig. Die Musik-Geschichtsschreibung wird sich entweder mühsam mit One-Man-Bands vor und nach KING AUTOMATIC befassen oder einfach den neuen Begriff One-Man-Big-Band übernehmen, denn der KING verlässt hier in mehr als 10 von 14 Tracks klassisches OMB Territorium. Platte des Jahres, keine Frage!

GREEN HELL (D)

Yeah! Das ist endlich mal wieder richtig geil kranker Trash auf Voodoo Rhythm. Der Lightning Beatman ist für derben Krach und bollernden One Man Trash natürlich bekannt, dürfte sich mit dem neusten Signing auf seinem Label aber selbst übertroffen haben!! King Automatic ist ein einzelner Franzose, der auf diesem Debüt dermaßen entfesselt kaputt und Hirn-erweichend Alarm schlägt, wie man es aus dem Land der Froschfresser lange nicht mehr gehört hat!! Dabei läßt der "King" völlig verzerrten, vor Rückkopplung jaulenden Blues Punk / Steinzeit Rock'n'Roll mit primitivem Elektro Trash kollidieren - wie ein 10 000 Volt Elektroschock durch den Körper eines Neanderthalers gejagt! Bezeichnenderweise werden dabei sowohl Kraftwerk ("The model") als auch Devo ("Mongoloid") gecovert und wer Probleme mit purem Feedback, kreischenden Verzerrern und wild blökenden Billig Synthies hat, der wird hier sein Waterloo erleben!!

The invasion of the one man bands has brought just another insane creature to life. Wrapped up in an impervious vesture of distortion, KING AUTOMATIC shows us his idea of the true rock'n'roll brilliance. Minimalistic to the bone, he just concentrates on the basics, a driving beat, a despiteous drilling guitar sound and some electronic trash attacks from time to time. A record that could only be out on VOODOO RHYTHM and a big must for all fans of King Louie, John Schooley and BBQ.

„I don’t like straight Rock ’n’ Roll…I like it more creative…more fucked up’, sagte REVEREND BEAT-MAN, Chef der MONSTERS, One-Man Band und President von VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS kürzlich in einem Interview. Eigentlich sollte der Reverend eine Show mit Sonny Vincent bestreiten, der aber sagte kurzfristig ab und so schlug die Promoterin vor eine gewisse One-Man Band namens KING AUTOMATIC einzuladen.
Den kannten davor vielleicht einige Wenige aus seinen THUNDERCRACK Tagen. Wie dem auch sei, KING AUTOMATIC kam, sah und bließ mit seinem DEVO-KRAFTWER-HASIL ADKINS-DEAD BOYS-Mix den Zuschauern deren Schaumkrone ins Gesicht… metaphorisch gesprochen natürlich, da Bier in Frankreich bekanntlich keine Schaumkrone besitzt.
Der Reverend entschloss, dass KING AUTOMATIC’s Sound definitiv “creative“ und “fucked up“ sei und dass sein Label VOODOO RHYTHM, das richtige zu Hause für Jay a.k.a. KING AUTOMATIC und seinen ELEKTRO BLUES TRASH sein würde. Einem Reverend widerspricht man nicht und so war’s geschehen, dass KING AUTOMATIC’S mit Kick Drum, Snare, Hi-Hat, Farfisa, Sampler und Gitarre eingespieltes Debutalbum mit dem Titel “AUTOMATIC RAY“ auf VOODOO RHYTHM, ein in Sachen STRANGE AND PRIMITIVE ROCK ’N’ ROLL solides zu Hause gefunden hatte.
KING AUTOMATIC’s Blues Trash Version des Kraftwerk Standards “Das Model“ muss man live gesehen haben, vor allem wenn er Anfangs nur ein, zwei Riffs einspielt, diese dann sampelt und loopt, um dann mit den eigentlichen Song zu beginnen. Wer glaubt sampeln und loopen sei Hip Hop und Elektro Schnick Schnack, kann sich bei “AUTOMATIC RAY“ eines besseren belehren lassen…dieses Album ist rauer, abgefuckter Blues Trash vom aller Feinsten.

One Man one Mission... THE mission to cross over Fast Driving rock'n'roll with Elektro Trash... mixed up punk rock with KRAFTWERK and DEVO, the song "I oversleep" sounds like the Stranglers having their mouth stuffed with potatoes and up the brain a electro shock of 10'000 VOLTS!!!
Sometimes the stuff is so ultra extremely distorted the only thing you here is a wall of noise and a melodie...sometimes... This is NO TOP 100 SHIT.
This is music from a desperate child who is against the music what is on today.... listening to the king, you Feel The Power to change the whole world of music TODAY!!!

Voodoo Rhythm Records steht für Rock´n´Roll Trash in Perfektion, was mit dem Neuzugang "King Automatic" ein weiteres mal mehr als bewiesen wird. Herr Automatic ist eine One-Man-Band und spielt somit alle Instrumente (und nicht nur die) selber ein. Wenn man das, was dabei rauskommt überhaupt irgendwie beschreiben kann, dann wohl als rotzigen Rock´n´Roll der sich mit Elektrotrash paart; muß man eigentlich selber hören... Wer auf abgefahrene Sachen steht, der sollte hier wohl unbedingt mal reinhören. Freunde "konventioneller" Rockmusik können sich die Kohle allerdings sparen und derweil auf ne neue ACDC Platte hoffen...
