| DEUTSCH MENIC ist in Bosten Massachusetts geboren und Aufgewachsen und Lebt jetzt in Bern der Schweiz, ist In Bern so was wie eine Lokale Legende, spielte in fast jedem Winkel und Strasse der Stadt als Strassen Musiker und auch vor Jedem Konzert Draußen mit seiner Klampfe oder Fiddle , hatte dann auch in Vielen Bands gespielt u.a. Zeno Tornado, The Dead Brothers, Mama Rosin, Delaney Davidson, The Tight Finks etc seine Musik ist als erstes im Nord Atlantischen Blues von Mississippi zu finden er mischelt aber gekonnt Punk, Cajun, Stoner Rock, Irish Folk and Bluegrass darunter und und mixt alles zu seinem ganz eigenen Cocktail. RAILROAD BLUES ANTHOLOGY ( vinyl LP + Audio CD) bringt euch 12 Songs und nimmt euch auf eine Zugreise mit und Weg durch sein Leben von kindheit bis jetzt, der Tonträger wurde im Star Track Studio in Schaffhausen mit GUZ und in Bern's Caliber Studio mit Adi Flück aufgenommen , gemastert wurde es von keinem anderen als: Eric Merz , MENIC ist ein MODERNER TROUBADOUR SÄNGER der viele geschichten zu erzählen hat REVIEWS ROOTSTIME (NL) Mensen die mij een beetje kennen weten dat ik een boon heb voor het Voodoo Rhythm-label. Naar mijn bescheiden mening zijn er weinig platenmaatschappijen in het rootswereldje die zo eigengereid hun eigen zin doen als onze Zwitserse vrienden. Meer zelfs, ik vertrouw blindelings op hun smaak, zelfs als ze een plaat als 'Future' van Die Zorros uitbrengen... Nu moet ik eerlijk toegeven dat ik even twijfelde bij het aanschouwen van de hoes van 'Railroad Blues Anthology' van Menic. In de eerste plaats verwacht je bij Voodoo Rhythm geen traditionele akoestische bluesplaat. Daarnaast leek Menic met zijn verfrommelde hoed en een akoestische gitaar niet meteen te passen in de Voodoo Rhythm-stal, ook al moeten ze daar niet van conventies weten. Laat mij meteen maar alle twijfel wegnemen: ik ben nog steeds van de kwaliteiten van de mensen uit Bern overtuigd! Wat is dit een heerlijk schijfje. Al vanaf opener 'Shake My Bones' mag het duidelijk zijn dat 'Railroad Blues Anthology' een bluesplaat is, maar wel één met een verdraaid eigen smoel. Persoonlijk had ik nog nooit van de man gehoord, al hoeft dat geen schande te zijn. 'Railroad Blues Anthology' is namelijk Menics solo-debuut. De mensen van Voodoo Rhythm leerde hem jaren geleden op straat kennen. Menic (zijn echte naam is ons trouwens onbekend) is al jaren een busker in Bern en bij grote bijeenkomsten. Oorspronkelijk is de zanger-gitarist afkomstig uit Boston,Massachusettes, maar hij woont al een hele tijd in Zwitserland. Daar is hij vooral bekend als gitarist en violist van het 'kick ass - blue grass' combo Zeno Tornado & The Boney Google Brothers. Met die band speelde hij in tal van Zwitserse clubs, maar nu is het dus tijd om met zijn eerste solo-album op de proppen te komen. 'Railroad Blues Anthology' bevat twaalf songs die een heel uiteenlopend palet bestrijken. Verschillende uitstappen naar folk en blues zorgen ervoor dat de plaat in even zo veel verschillende sferen gedijd. De hoofdmoot van de instrumenten is akoestisch: gitaar, banjo, mandoline, accordeon, contrabas, viool en slidegitaar. De muziek die met dit arsenaal gespeeld wordt zit ontegensprekelijk geworteld in de het zuiden van de VS, op de oevers van de Mississippi. Menic speelde met menig andere artiest samen en is mede daardoor thuis in nog heel wat verschillende andere genres. Met collega's en vrienden als The Dead Brothers, Mama Rosin, Delaney Davidson of The Tight Finks zijn uitstapjes naar punk, cajun, stoner rock of Ierse folk bijna vanzelfsprekend. Al deze invloeden zijn op verschillende momenten overduidelijk op 'Railroad Blues Anthology'. 'Gunpowder Mill', 'I Got A Halo', 'My Everyday Is A Noday Now', ... de voorbeelden van uiterst fijne songs op 'Railroad Blues Anthology' zijn legio. Ook al treedt Menic op deze cd aan met een aantal muzikanten, ik kan me perfect voorstellen dat de man en zijn gitaar genoeg zijn om een podium te vullen. Zijn songs voelen heel vertrouwd aan, zonder dat ze gedateerd of overbekend klinken. Tekstueel maakt hij fictie van zijn eigen verhaal. Op die manier toont hij zijn soms wel heel zwarte kant. Menic zorgt ervoor dat je je tegelijkertijd thuis voelt en kan verliezen in zijn muziek. Om even terug te komen op het eigenwijze karakter van het label waarop Menics 'Railroad Blues Anthology' verschijnt: achteraf bekeken is deze plaat een meer dan voor de hand liggende keuze geweest voor de mensen van Voodoo Rhythm. De muziek is kwalitatief hoogstaand, Menic valt op door zijn eigen geluid en het lijkt alsof hij zich van niets of niemand iets aantrekt. Perfect Voodoo Rhythm-materiaal als je het mij vraagt! (Preach) the national examiner (usa) Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Menic, whose solo debut was recently released by Voodoo Rhythm Records, is probably one of those artists that you have never heard of, despite his level of talent, and despite his long held and highly regarded place in the international roots scene. The reason you may have never heard of him, apart from the fact the he is part of a rather obscure scene that exists a great distance from mainstream music, is that he has worked and performed with a small handful of bands - Zeno Tornado, The Dead Brothers, Mama Rosin, Delaney Davidson, and The Tight Finks - but not as a lead member. From what I have gathered, Menic hails from Boston, Massachusettes, but he has been doing the expatriate thing for some years now, since relocating to Bern (Switzerland) and "Railroad Blues Anthology" is his first official solo endeavor outside being an occasional street musician. With twelve new original songs, "Railroad Blues Anthology" proves quite a debut from a promising artist. Menic certainly has his own style, as his sound, though primarily folk, touches on a few other genres, like blues, country and rockabilly. An all-acoustic album, "Railroad Blues Anthology" has a rustic, organic quality, making it a genuine roots offering. Be that as it may, Menic has developed his own take on these pre-existing styles, placing it somewhere between traditional and contemporary. And in that way it has a much broader appeal. Menic's lyrical content is top notch, too, as it is both personal and intelligent, with line after line of true-to-life material. In fact, in the liner notes, Menic comments that, "This album is dedicated to my family. It is a recollection of treasured memories and recent insights turned into fiction and wrought into song." Shake My Bones, the album's opener, is a lively country and rockabilly number, while the next song, I Sold Myself, is a folk song of a decidedly more somber note, with a detailed narrative about a young man who, leaving behind his family and his girl, goes off to experience the horrors of war. Lay Some Boot In is a bluesy song with some rather interesting lyrics. 1957 Ford Meteor is a fun rockabilly song. Gunpowder Mill is a tightly executed country tune about a working class woman and mother named Jenny. Henry Ford Revisited is a killer folk and blues composition. And the album's closer, Waiting for Zero, a countrified folk song, is the tale of a struggling musician. Singer/songwriter Delaney Davidson was quoted as having said this about Menic - "A great musician. Folk styles pour from this man like water from a storm cloud..." And that sums it up pretty well. BLUES MATTERS ( UK ) Zeno Tornado aka Menic plays out of Bern, Switzerland and has garnered favourable local reaction, especially as singer, guitarist and fiddle player with his band Zeno Tornado & The Boney Google Brothers. This is his first solo release, and he says that he draws influences amongst many others from Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zant. He has played with many artistes in the dispirit musical genres of punk, Cajun, Irish folk and bluegrass. It is fair to say that this eclectic grounding has informed what is an unusual and varied singer / songwriter album. The CD begins with the lively opening of 'Shake My Bones', then through the folk style of 'I Sold Myself', replete with whistles; and then on to the entirely solo 'Lay Some Boot In' with suitable boot percussion, of course. '1957 Ford Meteor' has a Jim Croce Americana feel, before the more country-influenced 'Gunpowder Mill' and 'I Got A Halo'. Most of the tracks have some fairly minimal accompaniment, typically of guitar, slide, banjo, double bass and accordion. A driving rhythm kicks off the excellent 'My Everyday Is A Noday Now', and Satch adds some neat square neck slide. 'Jack Rabbit Blues' is a particularly jaunty country Blues song. Occasionally the lyrics suffer from adopting the vernacular, for example in the cringe worthy "What's better than getting laid?" in 'Crazy Love', but mostly the words are intelligent and sung with conviction. The exception is the final track where the lyrics are self-serving and banal, but this song is easily omitted. The occasional turkey should not detract from an accomplished debut, which grows with repeated listening. Noggin GONZO CIRCUS (BE) We kenden Menic niet vooraf, net zoals we veel van de artiesten die Beatman uitbrengt op Voodoo Rhythm vooraf nooit eerder hoorden. En we worden meteen verrast, want dit is een plaat die we nooit van zijn leven op dit Zwitserse label (Bern) hadden verwacht. Niet omdat er blues op de plaat prijkt, maar omdat het van het traditionele akoestische soort is. Hier is geen sprake van feedback, chaos, gekte, lo-fi of wat dan ook als handelsmerk van Voodoo Rhythm kan worden gezien. Beatman houdt niet van conventies en doet gewoon zijn zin. En het toeval wil dat Menic, geboren en getogen in de buurt van Boston, Massachusettes, tegenwoordig in Zwitserland woont. Reden genoeg dus om weer eens iets helemaal anders op zijn label uit te brengen. Wanneer we nog verder spitten, blijkt dat Beatman Menic jaren geleden al van de straat plukte, alwaar hij als straatmuzikant aan de kost kwam. Menic leverde doorheen de jaren gastbijdrages aan tal van platen op Voodoo Rhythm en maakt deel uit van het prettig gestoorde combo Zeno Tornado & The Boney Google Brothers. We staan niet versteld als Menic zich helemaal niet beperkt tot blues, maar net zo goed folk, Americana en bluegrass incorporeert. Een deel van zijn ruime kennissenkring draagt een riedeltje bij, maar we blijft voornamelijk Menic zelf horen, op akoestische gitaar. De bijdrages op banjo, mandoline, accordeon, viool of staande bas voegen wat kleur toe maar zijn geenszins essentieel. Zeer opvallend is het ontbreken van enige lo-fi esthetiek in de opnames. Menics solodebuut klinkt uitermate professioneel en zuiver, en dat alleen is een novelty op Voodoo Rhythm. Twaalf eigen nummers die diep geworteld zijn in de muziek van het zuiden van de VS, zeg maar rond de Mississippi, vormen de plaat en tonen de veelzijdigheid van de straatmuzikant die Menic nog steeds is. Twaalf krakers in spe, vermoeden we, want zelf moeten we wennen aan het zuivere geluid van de plaat. Als dat geen onzin is... SHOOT ME AGAIN (FR) Le plus souvent, cela se passe dans l'autre sens, mais MENIC a chois de faire à l'inverse des autres. Originaire de Boston, il a choisi de venir s'installer en Suisse. Membre du ZENO TORNADO & THE BONEY GOOGLE BROTHERS, il est également reconnu par ses pairs comme un chanteur, compositeur et guitariste. Aussi à l'aise dans la rue que dans les clubs, MENIC réalise son premier album solo chez... Voodoo Rhythm Records bien entendu ! Railroad Blues Anthology est un disque composé de 12 titres aux ambiances assez différentes où MENIC joue aussi bien de la guitare que du banjo, de la mandoline, de la double basse, du violon ou de l'accordéon. Pour composer cet album, MENIC n'a pas hésité à puiser dans ses registres traditionnels à la fois Blues et américains, mais aussi dans les expériences acquises de ses nombreuses collaborations où l'artiste a pu se frotter au Punk, au Cajun, au Stoner, à l'Irish Folk et au Bluegrass. Des influences qu'il n'a pas hésité à retranscrire dans cet album. En somme, MENIC s'inscrit bien dans la veine des sorties de Voodoo Rhythm Records. Des registres musicaux régulièrement mis en évidence par le label du REVEREND BEAT-MAN. Il a également invité quelques amis à le rejoindre sur ce disque comme Magot et Satch de ZENO TORNADO AND THE BONY GOOGLE BROTHERS, Resli Burri de DEAD BROTHERS ou encore Cyril Yeterian de MAMA ROSIN, prouvant une fois de plus le côté familiale qui baigne autour du label suisse. Là où MENIC surprend, ainsi que le label, c'est dans le son. D'habitude pour ce genre de musique, Voodoo Rhythm Records nous a habitué à un son authentique, presque d'époque. Sur Railroad Blues Anthology, c'est un son propre, très moderne que l'on doit aux Star Track Studio et Caliber Studio. Franchement, si sur l'apparence, il manque ce côté un peu roots, les 12 compositions de Railroad Blues Anthology fonctionnent. Il n'est pas déplaisant de pouvoir profiter d'un son limpide qui fait briller les notes appuyées de ce troubadour moderne. Si MENIC n'est pour une fois pas sorti du garage, l'homme doit être tout aussi à l'aise, seul avec sa guitare, dans un bar miteux, une ruelle qu'une salle impeccablement sonorisé. Sa voix chaude, sa guitare maîtrisée et son style placé en douceur sont ses seuls atouts et ils suffisent à eux-même.
